NALEO Educational Fund, Nobody Leaves Mid-Hudson, New York Counts 2020, Community Voices Heard and the New York Immigration Coalition host a Census Train-the-Trainer.
Our country’s future is shaped in large part by the accuracy of the data collected by the U.S. Census Bureau on the nation’s population, with a specific emphasis on racial, ethnic and national origin groups. The data collected help ensure fair and representative reapportionment and redistricting, while also playing an indispensable role in the monitoring and implementation of civil rights policies, ensuring the effective allocation of $1.5 trillion dollars in federal, state and local funding. Public trust in government has been severely damaged through the battle to ensure an unnecessary and untested citizenship question was not added to the census questionnaire. As a result, our work to engage and empower the Latino community will be more important than ever.
What the training will include:
Module 1: Census 101
This training session will cover the importance of the 2020 Census, how the data are used and funding is allocated, overview of hard to count communities, challenges and opportunities of new approaches, changes to the Race and Hispanic Origin questions, and an overview of how and when everyone will be counted.
Module 2: Census Operations 2.0
This training session will cover a comprehensive overview of Census 2020 self response operations including mail, phone, and online methods. This session will also cover language access resources, alternative operations including Update Leave/Enumerate, Non-Response Follow up operations, counting of special populations and group quarters, and an overview of the U.S. Census Bureau partnership program.
Module 3: Census Ambassador
This last and final training session will ensure that all trainees leave the day as a Census Champion. This session will take participants through a comprehensive review of 2020 Census paper and online questionnaires, provide a census operations timeline, an overview of NALEO Educational Fund’s messaging research, GOTC field guidance and best practices, and an overview of available resources to help you pull together your GOTC plans.
